A new facility for the SA Police mounted unit, which has used grey horses since World War 1 and is the only Australian police service to do so. Facilities include a 40 × 70 metre indoor arena, an outdoor arena and 32 stables with large break-out yards. The stables also include cross ties, tack room, laundry, offices, uniform and equipment storage, a vet station, wash facilities, round yards, a walker and associated shedding. Significant sustainability measures: 350,000 litres of rainwater storage, 200 kW of solar to the indoor arena roof, and revegetation with around 14,000 plants of endemic species. Historical fabric from the century-old Thebarton Barracks has been incorporated into the new facility. The paddock design allows horses to eat and drink in group shelters, reducing pasture stress.
